Excursion «A walk around Nizhny Novgorod»

During this excursion you will visit different parts of the historical centre of Nizhny Novgorod and walk along legendary streets such as Bolshaya Pokrovskaya. It is located in the historical city centre and connects 4 main squares – Minin and Pozharsky, Theatre, Gorky and Lyadov. It became the main street of the city by end of the 18th century and until 1917 it was considered as “the noble family”.

After the revolution the street was named by the revolutionist Y.M. Sverdlov and was commonly called “Sverdlovka”. Until the 1980s it was a roadway and later became a pedestrian street. Then, after the Soviet Union’s collapse the street was returned the name of Bolshaya Pokrovskaya. In 2004 it was completely reconstructed – tiled with paving stones and adorned with installed bronze sculptures along both sides. The most popular sculptures are «Funny Goat» (in front of the Drama Theatre) and Monument to Policeman (on Minin and Pozharsky Square). Nowadays this street has turned into a real museum – it is full of cafes, restaurants, shops, ancient mansions and estates. The bronze Monument to Policeman invites tourists to enjoy all the beauty of the city.

Rozhdestvenskaya Street is one of the oldest and most sublime streets in Nizhny Novgorod. There are many large and unique stone houses, the history of which begins in the middle of the 18th century. According to official sources, there are about 35 architectural monuments. The main attraction is the Christmas Church. Rozhdestvenskaya Street is the second most important street of the city after Bolshaya Pokrovskaya. Actually, Rozhdestvenskaya Street and Markin Square are the most popular places if you want to visit luxurious restaurants, cafes and enjoy nightlife of Nizhny Novgorod. Moreover, this street connects National Unity Square, that is in front of the Kremlin, with the square in front of the Annunciation Monastery.
