Semenov is a small town in Nizhny Novgorod region, but it is well-known all over the world. Wonderful and marvellous golden Khokhloma was born there. In the XVII century was invented the art of painting on wood, that for centuries has been carefully passed from one generation to another. During this tour you will see how professionals create golden Khokhloma and beautiful matryoshka. You will also have a chance to take part in paining master-classes at the enterprises of art crafts «Khokhloma painting» and «Semenov painting».

In the capital of golden Khokhloma you will visit the Museum of Folk Life – «The house of Semyon Lozhkar». This is a large village house where you will imbue the sense of antiquity and see the peasant way of life. A caring hostess will tell you about the rules and main principles of a Russian family, secrets of home comfort, and will teach you how to use different antiques: battledores, rouble, rocker, etc.

Visit to the Khokhloma Painting Factory
Khokhloma, as in ancient times, brings a lot of pleasurable emotions to everyone who takes products in their hands and feels warmth of the hands of craftsmen, that created this amazing things. You will learn how this Khokhloma is created by visiting the factory. Especially, all guests will unlock the secret of the unique technology of «obtaining gold from silver».

Visit to the Museum and Tourist Centre «Golden Khokhloma»
There you will be introduced to the ancient art craft – unique Golden Khokhloma. You will see wonderful «Tsar’s Room», attend master-classes and learn new techniques and secrets of painting on matryoshkas, dolls or wooden spoons. (Master-classes are available for an extra charge – 150 rub.)

Those, who want to surprise their relatives and friends, may visit a shopping centre where it is possible to find a wide range of Khokhloma products – from small souvenirs to furniture and household items.

You will have a chance to see how professionals create golden Khokhloma and beautiful matryoshka and to take part in paining master-classes at the enterprises of art crafts «Khokhloma painting» and «Semenov painting».

Carpenters work in huge factories where they create wonderful pieces of art of wood. This is a really difficult work that includes patience and love. You will see how magical artists turn a wooden blank into a beautiful bowl or vase.

You can also learn the history of Khokhloma painting and the history of the city, observe the oldest works of Semenov masters in the local museum. There is located a unique exhibition dedicated to the life and work of the poet Boris Kornilov, whom locals honor a lot as a famous countryman. In the museum you will learn about the short, but very busy life of the poet, that ended during the years of repression.

Semenov is a memorial place. You will feel Russian antiquity walking on streets with wooden houses. Such small buildings are decorated with openwork lace, carvings, chimneys and flowers. Every year in June in Semenov it is possible to attend the festival «Golden Khokhloma», «Handicrafts Fair» and «The city of Masters».
